Apostles' Creed Lesson Plan

Objective: 

Students will be able to understand and recite the Apostles' Creed.

Materials:

  • Copies of the Apostles' Creed for each student
  • Pictures or illustrations of the main concepts in the Apostles Creed (e.g. God, Jesus, Holy Spirit)

Warm-up:

  • Ask students if they know what the Apostles' Creed is.
  • Explain that the Apostles Creed is a statement of belief that Christians have been using for hundreds of years to summarize their faith.

Direct Instruction:

  1. Read the Apostles' Creed together as a class.
  2. Discuss the meaning of each line:
  • "I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth."  
  • "I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord."  
  • "He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary."  
  • "He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried."  
  • "He descended to the dead."  
  • "On the third day he rose again."  
  • "He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father."  
  • "He will come again to judge the living and the dead."  
  • "I believe in the Holy Spirit."  
  • "The holy catholic Church, the communion of saints."  
  • "The forgiveness of sins."  
  • "The resurrection of the body."  
  • "And the life everlasting. Amen."

Guided Practice:

  • Divide students into pairs or small groups.
  • Have each group discuss and explain one line of the Apostles Creed to the rest of the class.

Independent Practice:

  • Have students practice reciting the Apostles Creed on their own or with a partner.

Closure:

  • Review the main points of the Apostles Creed and how it summarizes the core beliefs of Christianity.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about the Apostles Creed.

Activity:

  • Observe students as they recite the Apostles Creed to assess their understanding and proficiency.
  • Collect written responses from students explaining one line of the Apostles Creed.
