Apostles' Creed Lesson Plan
Objective:
Students will be able to understand and recite the Apostles' Creed.
Materials:
- Copies of the Apostles' Creed for each student
- Pictures or illustrations of the main concepts in the Apostles Creed (e.g. God, Jesus, Holy Spirit)
Warm-up:
- Ask students if they know what the Apostles' Creed is.
- Explain that the Apostles Creed is a statement of belief that Christians have been using for hundreds of years to summarize their faith.
Direct Instruction:
- Read the Apostles' Creed together as a class.
- Discuss the meaning of each line:
- "I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth."
- "I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord."
- "He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary."
- "He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried."
- "He descended to the dead."
- "On the third day he rose again."
- "He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father."
- "He will come again to judge the living and the dead."
- "I believe in the Holy Spirit."
- "The holy catholic Church, the communion of saints."
- "The forgiveness of sins."
- "The resurrection of the body."
- "And the life everlasting. Amen."
Guided Practice:
- Divide students into pairs or small groups.
- Have each group discuss and explain one line of the Apostles Creed to the rest of the class.
Independent Practice:
- Have students practice reciting the Apostles Creed on their own or with a partner.
Closure:
- Review the main points of the Apostles Creed and how it summarizes the core beliefs of Christianity.
- Ask students to share one thing they learned about the Apostles Creed.
Activity:
- Observe students as they recite the Apostles Creed to assess their understanding and proficiency.
- Collect written responses from students explaining one line of the Apostles Creed.
